The greater Frederick County region’s efficient transportation network—offering access to major highways and railways, three international airports, the Virginia Inland Port, and Winchester Regional Airport—enables businesses to connect efficiently with customers, partners, and markets worldwide.

Cover of Impact Study

A newly released economic impact study from the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) shows that Winchester Regional Airport (OKV) has experienced historic growth in recent years. Compared to 2017 baseline figures, the airport has nearly tripled its total economic contribution to the Commonwealth.

According to the study, growth is evident across every key indicator, demonstrating consistency across airport operations and related business activity and affirming OKV’s role as a major regional economic engine.

The airport now supports 610 jobs and generates more than $28.5 million in wages for the local workforce. In addition, OKV contributes $46.9 million to Virginia’s Gross State Product (GSP), representing direct value added to the state economy. These results place Winchester Regional Airport among the top five general aviation airports in the Commonwealth.

Beyond these measurable impacts, general aviation airports are a critical asset for economic development. Facilities like Winchester Regional Airport provide businesses with flexible, efficient access that supports executive travel, client engagement, site visits, and time-sensitive operations. For companies evaluating new locations, a strong general aviation airport signals a community equipped with modern infrastructure and the capacity to support growth. For existing businesses, it enhances connectivity to new and emerging markets, strengthens operational efficiency, and reinforces the region’s ability to compete in a global economy.
